International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination
March 21, 2024During the March 18, 2024 Governance and Priorities Committee meeting, Councillor Erin Stevenson proclaimed March 21, 2024 to be the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is observed annually, to commemorate the tragic day in 1960 when police in Sharpeville, South Africa opened fire on a peaceful crowd of anti-apartheid demonstrators, killing 69 people.

World Suicide Prevention Day Proclamation
September 10, 2023During the August 21, 2023 Regular Council Meeting Councillor Stuart Houston proclaimed September 10, 2023 to be World Suicide Prevention Day, which was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization to promote awareness of suicide prevention, to reduce the stigma of talking about suicide and accessing treatment, and to recognize that we all have a role to play in preventing suicide.
