Home Energy Efficiency Kits

The City of Spruce Grove is partnering with the Spruce Grove Public Library to offer Home Energy Efficiency Kits to our residents.

Created by the City and available to borrow through the library (available at the Heavy Metal Place branch), Home Energy Efficiency Kits include a variety of tools that will allow residents to assess their current energy consumption, discover opportunities for efficiencies and potential cost savings, and see the associated environmental impacts. Four kits are available for loan. 

Residents will find the following tools in the kit:

Thermal scanners
Thermal scanners use infrared sensors to detect heat and generate thermal images, highlighting variations in temperature. This information can be used to detect air leaks, identify areas where insulation is inadequate, or assess the performance of heating/cooling systems providing valuable data for homeowners looking to improve energy efficiency and reduce utility bills.

Fridge and freezer thermometers
Use these thermometers to monitor the temperature inside your fridge or freezer to help identify issues that may lead to higher energy consumption. Adjusting the temperature to match an appliance’s recommended settings can lead to significant savings.

Radon detectors
Radon is a radioactive, colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas that can accumulate in the basements and lower levels of homes and is a recognized health hazard. Radon detectors measure the concentration of radon gas in the air for comparison against the World Health Organization (WHO) Action Levels and Health Canada Action Levels.

Thermometers and hygrometers
A combination thermometer and hygrometer measures household temperatures and humidity levels simultaneously. Using this data to optimize heating and cooling systems can improve energy efficiency while enhancing comfortability.

Wattmeters
Wattmeters measure the electrical energy consumed by household appliances in Kilowatt-hours (kWh). Readings can be used to determine how much an appliance costs to run over time. These insights are helpful in monitoring energy usage and evaluating efficiency.

Air quality monitors
Indoor air quality monitors that measure CO2 levels and Particulate Matter (PM2.5) are valuable tools for assessing the health and safety of indoor environments. Better ventilation can improve air quality, reduce health risks, and improve energy efficiency.
