Provincial referendum signage in Spruce Grove

A provincial referendum that is being administered by Elections Alberta is happening on Monday, Oct. 19, 2026.

As such, Elections Alberta is responsible for planning the election and all referendum signage, including guidelines related to the size and placement of election signs.

Last year, the Government of Alberta passed Bill 54, the Election Statutes Amendment Act, 2025, which changed how provincial election and referendum signage is regulated across Alberta. The legislation significantly limits the ability of municipalities to regulate this type of advertising through their local bylaws.

This means the City of Spruce Grove does not regulate election signs or election advertisements related to the referendum, including content, size, or location. Advertisers are encouraged to follow the guidelines outlined by Elections Alberta. Inquiries or complaints regarding the content of referendum signage can be directed to Elections Alberta. 

Signs placed on private property require the permission of the property owner.

The City does retain authority related to public safety and municipal operations and action may be considered if signage is having a significant impact on municipal operations, is creating a safety concern (ex: blocking sightlines), or is having an impact on the intended use of a public space or facility. The City also does not allow referendum nor election signage on the property of City-owned facilities.
