Maintaining Pioneer Cemetery as a place of peace and remembrance; cleanup scheduled for Oct. 30, 2026
The City of Spruce Grove is committed to caring for Pioneer Cemetery as a peaceful, well-maintained place where families can honour and remember their loved ones.
To help preserve the cemetery’s serenity, and in keeping with the City’s Cemetery Bylaw, we will be conducting scheduled site maintenance and cleanup on Oct. 30, 2026.
We know placing personal tributes on cemetery grounds can bring tremendous comfort. At the same time, ongoing care is essential to protect the natural beauty and safety of the grounds for everyone who visits.
Some items, while placed with love, are not permitted because they can create maintenance barriers, safety concerns, or pest issues, or may be blown into surrounding areas, causing hazards or litter.
As part of the cleanup, non-permitted items will be carefully removed. This ensures the cemetery remains a respectful and accessible space for years to come.
Non-permitted items include:
- Fences or railings, furniture, statues, monuments, rocks or markers
- Landscaping such as shrubs, trees or flowers intended for growth
- Landscaping materials such as rocks, aggregates, edging, concrete or brick borders
- Mementos, solar lights, toys, flowerpots or anything not placed in the vase affixed to a marker.
If you have placed any non-permitted items on cemetery grounds, we kindly ask that you collect them for safekeeping before Oct. 30, 2026.
Uncollected items will be respectfully catalogued, collected, and stored at a City facility until Oct. 30, 2027. Following the Oct. 30 cleanup, any newly placed, non-permitted items will be removed during weekly maintenance and stored for 30 days. Perishable items will be disposed of and will not be available for pick-up.
Families can arrange to retrieve items by contacting Public Works at 780-962-7584.
Please note, leaving non-permitted items near gravesites can lead to fines as per the City’s Cemetery Bylaw: C-1056-18.
We recognize how meaningful these mementos are and hold deep respect for everyone with loved ones resting at Pioneer Cemetery.
Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we care for this special place.
