City launches pilot aeration system at McLaughlin stormwater management facility

June 3, 2025

The City is piloting a new aeration system at the McLaughlin stormwater management facility, which is expected to help improve water quality, reduce algae and control odour.

Crews are currently working on installing the system, which is anticipated to be operational by mid- to late June.

Stormwater aeration is important because over time sediment can build up at the bottom of the facility, creating a muddy foundation that reduces oxygen levels and disrupts the ecosystem. Aeration systems help circulate facility water to increase oxygen levels, promote faster organic decomposition and reduce sediment buildup. The pilot project will include both bottom diffusers and a floating fountain to circulate water from both directions.

If the McLaughlin pilot program is successful, similar systems may be installed at other stormwater management facilities in the future.
