City launches Extended Producer Responsibility program

April 1, 2025

Starting today, April 1, 2025, the City of Spruce Grove will be participating in the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program, which benefits communities by shifting the costs of recycling from local municipalities and taxpayers throughout Alberta, to producers and manufacturers.

What does this mean for the community?

  • More recycling options – plastic clamshell containers and Tetra Paks can now be added to blue bags. This includes items such as bakery and fruit packages, rotisserie chicken containers, and boxed soup or drink cartons.
  • Less waste in black carts – more waste can be diverted from black waste carts and redirected to the recycling stream.
  • Same reliable service – there are no changes to blue bag curbside pickup schedules, just more opportunities for recycling.
