City explores options for future of Horizon Stage
As construction begins on a new high school to replace the current Spruce Grove Composite High School, the City is actively exploring options to retain and enhance Horizon Stage, which is connected to the existing school.
Building a new theatre as part of the new high school project was determined not to be financially or logistically feasible; however, Horizon Stage underwent major renovations in 2009 and still offers many years of useful service. While the current high school will eventually be demolished, the City is exploring options to retain Horizon Stage that would allow it to operate as a stand-alone facility, including potential partnerships and upgrades.
“We are excited to see shovels hit the ground and construction begin on the new high school, as we know this is a needed investment that will benefit students in our city for years to come,” said Mayor Jeff Acker. “We also recognize the value and importance of Horizon Stage as a cultural hub in our community and are committed to keeping this facility open and available as a space that supports arts and culture in Spruce Grove.”
Cost estimates are being developed for consideration as part of the City’s 2026 Budget and Fiscal Plan process. No decisions have been made, and no financial commitments are expected until early 2026.
The upcoming 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 Horizon Stage performance seasons are not expected to be impacted, and the facility remains available for rent by community groups and individuals.
The City is committed to keeping the community updated and informed as we explore options and move through the planning and budgeting process over the coming months.
