Artist selected to create 40th anniversary mural at Heavy Metal Place

July 14, 2026

The City has selected Tyler Toews to create a new mural at Heavy Metal Place, celebrating Spruce Grove’s 40th anniversary of incorporation as a city, which is being celebrated in 2026.

Toews is best known for his work on large-scale, three-dimensional and anamorphic murals that transform public spaces into vibrant, community-focused art experiences by integrating the space and architecture of the mural location into the artwork.

With over 200 public artworks across Canada, his pieces are known for their dynamic interaction with viewers, blending fine and street art influences to create visual depth and immersive spatial illusion.

As the City celebrates this milestone year, the mural’s themes will explore the ideas of growth, community, identity, and the past, present and future of Spruce Grove.

The mural is being created inside the Decker Properties Atrium at Heavy Metal Place and Toews will be painting on site for the next several days, with the unveiling of the mural expected in late July. Those wanting to watch him work are asked to remain behind the barriers for the safety of the artist and Heavy Metal Place patrons and staff.

The City of Spruce Grove is proud to support and commission the creation of public art throughout the community.
