Columbus Park maintenance work

The City of Spruce Grove receives its potable (drinkable) water from the Capital Region Parkland Water Services Commission through a watermain that comes from Edmonton and extends to Stony Plain. In 2024 the Commission started upgrades to the watermain to ensure the ability to provide adequate water supply to the growing population in the Parkland area.

In tandem with the Commission project, the City will be undertaking work to construct a new water fill building with connections to two existing reservoirs and connecting to the newly upgraded Commission watermain.

The water fill building will be constructed on a section of the parking lot at Henry Singer Park and will impact groups that use the baseball diamonds and pickleball courts located at the park. A portion of the parking lot will be blocked off for construction laydown and work, and there will be construction activity present that will create noise and potentially produce dust. Users are encouraged to carpool when possible.

Once complete, this work will ensure the ability to provide adequate water supply to the growing population in the area.

Project timeline:
Construction started in the summer of 2024 and will be ongoing through winter and spring of 2025.

Project status:
Ongoing, 2025 work scheduled to start in May.

Infrastructure improvements west of the McLeod Avenue and Jennifer Heil Way intersection are needed to accommodate future planning in the area south of the Legacy Park neighbourhood. The planned construction work will improve existing neighbourhood access in Legacy Park and connect municipal services to a portion of the vacant land to the south of Legacy Park.

Phase one, 2024: Work included the construction of a temporary road south of McLeod Avenue to provide residents access to the area while the temporary closure of the McLeod Avenue roadway took place. Upgrades included underground infrastructure installation and road upgrades.

Phase two, 2025: Starting May 6, infrastructure improvements will continue along McLeod Avenue. This includes utility installation to connect power, gas and communication services in the area.

Traffic disruptions are expected due to lane narrowing at the McLeod Avenue westbound entrance to the neighbourhood. Two-way traffic will be maintained, and the westbound lane will remain open with restrictions. Work is expected to take two to three weeks and will take place between 7.a.m. and 7 p.m. Full roadway lane use is anticipated to be in place outside of these hours.

A full sidewalk closure will occur on the north side of McLeod Avenue. Pedestrians will be detoured to the north pathway to access Jennifer Heil Way.

In late spring/summer residents can expect sidewalk construction along the south side of McLeod Avenue to start. Pedestrians should anticipate disruptions at that time.

Phase three, 2026: Work will include road resurfacing along McLeod Avenue west of Jennifer Heil Way. Traffic delays are anticipated.
