Heavy Metal Place
Heavy Metal Place is a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose recreation and culture facility located at 50 Westwind Drive in Spruce Grove. Along with two NHL-size ice surfaces, a versatile black box theatre, and a community walking track, Heavy Metal Place is home to:
- The Junior “A” Spruce Grove Saints of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) who play their home games at the Thompson Family Arena
- A full-service branch of the Spruce Grove Public Library
- The Allied Arts Council of Spruce Grove and the LJL Galleries Community Art Gallery
- The Spruce Grove Transit Centre
Facility Rentals
Many of the spaces and amenities at Heavy Metal Place are available to community groups and individuals and can be rented for private lessons, performances, celebrations, and events. See the Facility Rentals page for more information.
Programs and Services

The Community Walking Track is located on the concourse of Thompson Family Arena. It is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free to use with no drop-in fees required. The track is approximately 210 meters (688 feet) or 0.21 kilometers long.
Important information for users:
- The walking track is not consistently monitored or supervised by facility staff.
- Be aware of flying pucks and other objects. The arena is equipped with protective netting, but pucks or other objects may still leave the ice surface.
- The track surface is unmarked concrete. Running is not recommended.
- Appropriate indoor footwear is required.
- Stollers are permitted on the track. Ensure wheels are clean and dry before walking.
- Children are welcome. Ensure they understand and follow the walking track rules.
- Music and crowd noise may be loud. Hearing protection is recommended for users who are sensitive to noise.
- Elevator access to the concourse is available. Stop by the Customer Experience desk for assistance.
The walking track may temporarily close for maintenance, special events or other operational needs. Check this page before you go for any temporary closures.

Lace up your skates and hit the ice! Whether you want to compete in a friendly game of shinny, practice your stick and puck skills, or take some leisurely laps around the rink, you can do it at Heavy Metal Place. See the full public skating schedule on the Public Ice Programs page.
Located just outside Heavy Metal Place, the Spruce Grove Transit Centre is the hub for all commuter service in and out of Spruce Grove and a regular stop for the On-Demand Local Transit Service. Get more information on the Spruce Grove Transit Centre page.

Cst. Brett Ryan Community Arena
The Community Arena at Heavy Metal Place is named in honour of Brett Ryan, a Spruce Grove resident and Edmonton Police Service constable who was killed in the line of duty while responding to a call for assistance on March 16, 2023. Learn more about Cst. Brett Ryan.
