Shaping Our Community: Imagine the possibilities for our future
As Spruce Grove continues to grow and evolve, now is the time for us to look forward and shape our city’s future through a collaborative multi-phase project.
On October 3, the City of Spruce Grove launched Shaping Our Community, an initiative to update the City’s Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and imagine the possibilities of what Spruce Grove can be in 10, 20 or even 30 years from now.
Shaping Our Community is about creating a long-term vision for the future of our city through partnering with the community to understand our collective hopes and dreams for Spruce Grove and how we can build on what we have to create the city we want to become.
The result of this work will be The Shape of Our Community, Spruce Grove’s new MDP.
A MDP is a document that outlines a long-range vision for the future development of a community and all Alberta municipalities are required to adopt a Municipal Development Plan bylaw in accordance with the Municipal Government Act.
Since Shaping Our Community is a shared vision for the future, the project involves three phases of significant community consultation and engagement. The first phase runs from October 3-28, 2022, and community members can provide their feedback online or in-person. Watch for City Ambassadors collecting feedback at a variety of locations in Spruce Grove throughout the month of October. Following each phase of engagement, City staff will review the information that has been collected, identify trends, conduct research and continue building the plan.
“This project will capture the community’s long-term vision for Spruce Grove and is a huge opportunity for us to shape the future of our city,” said Spruce Grove Mayor Jeff Acker. “We’re so excited to be kicking off Shaping Our Community and I really want to encourage our residents and businesses to get involved and share your ideas through these upcoming public engagement opportunities. The more feedback we receive, the better we can understand your vision for Spruce Grove and incorporate that into our new MDP.”
The Shape of Our Community is expected to be complete by the end of 2023 and will outline a vision for the evolution and growth of our city over the next 20-30 years.
Additionally, it will be used to guide the City’s growth, support the community’s values and vision, provide a foundation for other City plans, and be an important decision-making tool for Council, Administration, and other stakeholders.
The City’s current MDP Your Bright Future was adopted in July 2010. A progress report was released in 2015.
