Family Violence Prevention Month

October 31, 2022

November is Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta. Each year, the City joins with our neighbouring municipalities and community partners to increase awareness of family violence and the resources that are available.

The 2022 theme for Family Violence Prevention Month is “Shine a Light”. The goal is to increase awareness through education and listening, so we can end family violence and build healthier relationships.

Purple Porch Light campaign

During the month of November, residents are encouraged to show their support for victims of family violence by installing a purple-coloured light bulb on their porch, driveway or outside their home. Lighting a purple porch light not only increases awareness of family violence, but also shows solidarity with those who suffer.

Free purple porch light bulbs (one per household) will be available on Wednesday, November 2, 2022:

  • Spruce Grove Tri Leisure Centre (221 Jennifer Heil Way) – 1-4 p.m.
  • Spruce Grove Public Library (35, 5 Avenue) – 4:30-6 p.m.

Real Talk workshop

Residents are invited to take part in a free, virtual Real Talk workshop on November 24, 2022. The session will help participants:

  • Speak openly and in a safe space about domestic violence,
  • Recognize signs of domestic violence in family, friends and co-workers,
  • Learn how to listen, empathize and ask questions,
  • Increase awareness about resources available to those who suffer.

The workshop takes place virtually from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 24, 2022. Participation is free but registration is required.
