Council approves renovation and expansion of Protective Services building

December 13, 2016

Spruce Grove City Council has approved a project to renovate and expand the current Protective Services building.

Located at 460 King St., the existing building is home to the City's Fire Services/EMS and Enforcement Services staff, as well as the RCMP detachment.

The project, which will be done in a phased approach, will include an expansion on land east of the current facility, providing room for new administrative offices, equipment bays, dorms and training space.

Once the expansion, which will add another 3,300 square metres of space to the building, is complete, staff will move into the new area to allow renovations to be completed in the existing facility.

Fire/EMS and Enforcement service levels to the community will not be impacted during the construction and renovation phases.

The expansion will require the removal of an existing ball diamond and track. A new ball diamond, as well as a new class B soccer field, will be constructed south of the new building.

Included as an initiative in the City's 2017-2019 Corporate Plan, work on the estimated $20.87 million project will begin next year, starting with site work and servicing. Work to decommission and replace the ball diamond and add the new soccer field will be scheduled to minimize impact to the nearby school and community.

Construction on the expansion will begin in the spring of 2018 and the renovation work will start in early 2019 with the entire project wrapping up in late 2019.
