Spruce Grove FCSS offers preventative programs for youth to support social connection, resiliency, and mental well-being.

"Mind Full" Mondays - Summer 2022

Join us for a practical and hands-on approach to understanding and improving youth mental health. Youth are the experts of their worlds! Through seven weeks and seven topics, youth will be supported to become more informed about their mental health, more active, and more resilient!

This workshop will primarily explain what resiliency is and why building resiliency skills are important to fostering optimal mental health. In addition, participants will learn briefly about the key resiliency components, including healthy eating, exercise, and sleep. Participants will engage in meaningful conversations and self-reflection and develop a plan of action to improve their personal wellness.

This workshop is a strengths-based approach to recognize and develop one's intrinsic positive qualities. This workshop includes a creative art activity to highlight these qualities, and how they can be utilized!

Recognizing the qualities of people and our environment helps us foster positive experiences. This workshop will focus on creating nurturing, protective, and wise figures. A writing-based intervention will solidify gratitude for these figures and their positive influence in the youth's life.

This workshop will include psychoeducation about a key component of resiliency: self-compassion! Self-compassion is the ability to look at ourselves without focusing on the things that we could have improved; rather, those things that we did well! Youth will be led through a collaborative activity to learn more about themselves, and the qualities they possess that can remind them of the importance of being kind to themselves.

This workshop will guide participants through the neuroscience of stress and the ways in which we can encourage presence, emotional regulation, and emotional intelligence. Participants will learn strategies that can help decrease the amount of stress that is felt daily. Participants will also learn and participate in numerous grounding exercises, such as guided meditation and progressive muscle relaxation.

Looking at their strengths and areas of wellness which may require improvement, youth will develop a strengths-based wellness maintenance plan to ensure that they continue to apply the skills they have learned throughout the summer months to support positive mental health.

Learning to communicate is an essential ingredient to personal wellness for all humans, especially adolescents. Participants will learn to communicate their needs in a healthy and constrictive matter while being respectful of their needs and surroundings.

This last workshop is for youth who are interested in becoming more aware of how to help those in their communities with mental health. Focus will be on learning boundaries when helping others, being aware of available community supports, and knowing to how recognize the impact on oneself when it comes to being a human helper. Participants must have attended at least five of the summer sessions to be eligible for this workshop. This workshop will help participants develop a plan of how they can become positive influences in sharing their wellness skills with those around them.
