Commuter Transit

The City of Spruce Grove is pleased to offer a commuter transit service to Edmonton through a contract with Edmonton Transit System (ETS) and the City of Edmonton. This service is an affordable and environmentally-friendly alternative to the costs of driving into the city and parking downtown or on campus.

ETS Route 197 PDF is an express service that operates every 15-20 minutes during morning and afternoon peak hours, starting at 5:34 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. with a mid-day route leaving Edmonton at 1:35 p.m. The route includes stops at NAIT and Grant MacEwan University, and through to the downtown core.

September 2, 2014 Transit Changes

The City of Spruce Grove is conducting a transit service review to determine the best plan for its commuter service going forward. Route and fare changes were approved for September 2, 2014

U-Pass for students

All full-time University of Alberta External, Grant MacEwan University External, and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) External students receive a Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass) for the fall and winter academic terms. This pass gives students access to all ETS services within Edmonton including the LRT.

The City of Spruce Grove reminds post secondary students that the Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass) is not accepted on Route 197. The City contracts Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) to provide limited peak-hour service from Spruce Grove to Edmonton. Although Route 197 looks like a typical ETS bus, it is a separate system entirely and there is no transferability between Route 197 and the rest of the ETS system.

The City is aware of the concerns of students and parents about the U-Pass and understands that purchasing both the Route 197 pass and the U-Pass is an added cost for students because they are not able to opt out of the U-Pass. A discounted Student Pass will be introduced in September 2014 to help reduce the cost of using transit service.

Additional information is available in this U-PASS Fact Sheet.
