When does the City clear the streets?
Snow and ice control is undertaken on a priority basis
throughout the city. Our first line of attack against snow and ice is application of sand / salt to major roadways.
What streets are cleared first?
Snow plowing commences on high priority roadways
when the depth of snow reaches 3 cm and the snowfall is forecast to continue. Snow routes are also cleared on a priority basis
Snow routes
Information boards are placed along the city’s snow routes. Specific dates and times will be posted on these boards to give residents a minimum of 24 hours notice that snow clearing will begin on these routes.
Please do not park on snow routes during these times, or your vehicle will be removed at your own risk and expense.
When the word ‘relaxed’ appears on the boards, parking is permitted in parking areas along snow routes.
Snow routes are cleared on a priority basis
. You can follow the progress of snow route clearing.
Are local residential streets cleared?
Due to the large expense, the City only plows local residential streets if the accumulation of snow exceeds 15 cm or greater. The clearing of local subdivision streets just once can easily cost $70,000 or more, depending on the amount of snow that has fallen.
When residential snow clearing is in effect (watch for signs in your neighbourhood), you can follow the progress of residential snow clearing. It is updated regularly when residential snow clearing is in progress.
When snow plowing is undertaken on residential streets, the snow is plowed into a windrow no higher than 1 metre onto the boulevards on one or both sides of the street or in the parking lane on one side of the street; the City will not plow snow onto a public sidewalk.
Are local residential streets cleared in new subdivisions?
Until the City has accepted the roads and utilities from a private developer of a new subdivision, the developer is responsible for roadway snow removal.
Does the City clear any sidewalks?
The City also clears snow from public sidewalks adjacent to City owned buildings and facilities, in and adjacent to city parks, along highways and arterial roadways and the trails in the Heritage Grove Trail system.
Do local residents clear any sidewalks?
Under the City’s Traffic Bylaw, property owners are required to remove snow and ice from public sidewalks adjacent to their property within 48 hours of a snowfall and to keep sidewalks free of ice.
Where can unsafe road or sidewalk conditions be reported?
Get in touch with us to report a problem.
Does Spruce Grove have a snow dump?
Yes. The City of Spruce Grove snow dump is located at the Public Works Shop - 1 Schram Street. There is a service fee per load to dump snow.
