The City of Spruce Grove is lead by a hard-working council of seven members, mayor and six aldermen.  The current city council was elected in October 2007 and will serve a three-year term. Currently Spruce Grove city council is:

After serving the City of Spruce Grove as an alderman for six years, Mayor Houston is both proud and honoured to be elected as mayor. He feels as though the City of Spruce Grove is the absolute best place to reside in the capital region.

Mayor Houston has been on a variety of boards and committees, including Horizon Stage and the Alberta Waste Minimization committee. He has also been the chairman of the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre. For many years mayor Houston has been involved in the development of community youth where he has had the opportunity to work with so many great kids and parents. Over 12 years he coached more than 700 games of hockey for Spruce Grove and for 17 years he has been involved with Spruce Grove Minor Ball and the development of AAA baseball.

Since 1986, mayor Houston has worked for Triple Five Corporation where he is a Structural Supervisor for West Edmonton Mall Engineering and Maintenance. He has been a resident of Spruce Grove since 1977. Mayor Houston resides in the city with his wife and three children.

Alderman Jeff Acker is looking forward to his first term with Spruce Grove’s city council. He has tremendous pride for Spruce Grove and it is his priority to work with council and administration to find the best and most effective ways to inform, involve, and celebrate citizen involvement.

Alderman Acker has always had the desire to make an active, positive, difference in the community. He has experience volunteering with the Spruce Grove Community Policing Advisory Council and the Yellowhead Regional Library. He has especially enjoyed working with the Kin Club of Fort Edmonton. He has led numerous fundraising and community volunteer committees such as the national Barbeque Canada initiative and he has co-chaired the Boys and Girls Camp Discovery renovation project. He also assists the Spruce Grove Kinettes in their annual Christmas Hamper project.

He is the president of Broadport Canada Inc. an internet business services clients across North America. He is recently married and enjoys camping, fishing, travelling, and socializing with friends and family in his spare time. He is proud to say that he has always been a resident of Spruce Grove.

Alderman Louise Baxter

Alderman Louise Baxter is currently serving her third term with Spruce Grove city council. She is committed to ensuring that Spruce Grove becomes the community of choice for everyone, no matter what their age or circumstance.

Alderman Baxter was a representative on the Capital Region Waste Minimization board, the Parkland Water Commission, the Theatre board, the Tax Assessment/Development Appeal Board, the Meridian Foundation, the Spruce Grove Library Board and the Yellowhead Regional Library Board. She is a former member of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and served a two-year term as president of the Edmonton Chapter. She has also volunteered as a probation officer for the province of Ontario and served on the FCSS Board for the City of Spruce Grove.

She has lived in Spruce Grove since 1984 where she is the co-owner of a local used and collectable bookstore. Alderman Baxter is married with two children, five stepchildren and 11 grandchildren in a blended family.

Alderman Glenn Jensen

This is alderman Glenn Jensen’s first term with the Spruce Grove city council. He considers being elected by residents a significant accomplishment. He decided to enter municipal politics based on his desire to work with the community to make Spruce Grove an even better place to live and to work.

Alderman Jensen has served on the Recreation Advisory Board for eight years, four of which he was chairman. He has been an Auxiliary RCMP officer for seven years and he has been on the Awards of Excellence committee since its inception. Alderman Jensen also volunteers on the Energize Recreation Volunteer Award Committee.

Alderman Jensen has been working with Canada Safeway for six years. He has over 23 years experience in the hospitality industry and has had the opportunity to work in the pastry kitchen of a five star hotel in Switzerland. Alderman Jensen has been married for 15 years and he is the proud father of two daughters.

Alderman Randy Palivoda

Randy Palivoda owns his own company, working as an international trade consultant and as an importer and exporter. After completing a master’s degree in international relations at the University of Alberta, he pursued a career in public service, quickly working his way into senior level positions. He has served in various positions within economic development, trade, and immigration, working for the governments of Canada and Alberta, both at home and in the United States.

Over the years, Randy’s interest in international relations has kept him active with committee work for organizations such as the United Nations Association in Canada, the International Human Rights Conference (planning committee member), Economic Development Edmonton, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, and the Edmonton Export Club. He is still actively involved with the Canada/Japan Society and the Edmonton chapter of the Pacific Corridor Enterprise Council.

On behalf of the City of Spruce Grove, Randy serves on the Meridian Foundation Management Board, the Capital Region Parkland Water Services Commission, and the Spruce Grove Library Board.

Randy and his wife Gail have made Spruce Grove their home since 1976. They have three grown children with whom they share an interest in hiking, mountain climbing and fly-fishing.

Alderman Wayne Rothe is currently serving his fifth term on Spruce Grove city council. He is a firm believer that citizens should be involved the community. He entered politics and enjoys his role as alderman because it allows him to positively influence the future of Spruce Grove. His core philosophies include integrity in government, fiscal restraint, open communication, consultation with citizens and well-planned growth.

Over the years, alderman Rothe has had the opportunity to represent the city on most of its boards and committees and has been an active member of the community over the last 32 years.

Alderman Rothe is an independent certified financial planner who loves working with and helping people. He keeps busy with council responsibilities, and an active family and business life. He is married with two adult children and enjoys the outdoors and travelling with his wife.

Alderman Bill Steinburg

Alderman Steinburg has been serving the people of Spruce Grove for several terms both as an alderman and as mayor.

An active member of the community, alderman Steinburg is a volunteer board member with Neighbourlink Parkland in Spruce Grove, which is aligned with World Vision Neighbourlink Canada. He is also responsible for presenting "Putting the House in Order" to the Alberta Municipalities Association Conference.

A medical radiation technologist in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, alderman Steinburg was the manager of radiology at the Misericordia Hospital for 27 years. Post-retirement, Bill is a health care consultant with a background in finance administration and capital projects. He presented one of the first automated computerized equipment assessment programs for use in tendering diagnostic imaging equipment, which was published at the 12th Symposium for Computer Assisted Radiology in Winston Salem, North Carolina.
