Spruce Grove’s pink firefighters participated in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers on July 23 and 24. Over two days, four Fire Service members walked 60 kilometres to raise money and awareness for the important work the Alberta Cancer Foundation is doing to assist women.

“The event was a great example of people coming together for a common goal,” says firefighter Bryce McNalley. “It was definitely a challenge going up and down the hills in Calgary, but our team, along with everyone else, held on till the bitter end. We covered a total of 32 kilometers on day one and 28 kilometers on day two.”

While participating in the walk, the firefighters wore special pink bunker gear that was made specifically for their efforts to raise money for women’s cancers. Collectively they raised close to $9,000 for the cause through calendar sales and other promotional events.

Funds raised support the work of the Alberta Cancer Foundation and their efforts to end breast and gynecologic cancers, diseases that one in seven Canadian women will be diagnosed within her lifetime.
