Municipal Affairs financial reporting

The Municipal Government Act requires that every Alberta municipality prepare an annual financial information return and annual audited financial statements. The annual financial information return is audited and submitted to Alberta Municipal Affairs by May 1 of each year.

Financial indicator graphs are prepared by Alberta Municipal Affairs using the municipal financial and statistical data included in the audited returns. The graphs are intended to serve as a tool that may assist Council and administration with operational decisions. The comparative measures may be useful in assessing past performance and for budget planning. Each municipality is compared to a group of similar sized urban municipalities, or to rural municipalities with similar tax base.

Financial statements

Prepared by the City's Finance department, the annual consolidated financial statements are audited for compliance with Public Sector accounting standards by an external accounting firm.  The City's financial policies and business processes are also included in this external review.
