Water Conservation

Changing our actions to conserve water is an important first step. A few small changes will go a long way! Consider both indoor and outdoor water saving tips.

Take advantage of an incentive program!

The City adopted a Utility Bylaw amendment dealing with water efficient fixtures. This would require all new construction and major renovations requiring a plumbing permit to install efficient fixtures, such as water saving toilets, faucets, and showerheads.

Worried about a leaky toilet?

Leaky toilets waste up to 400 litres of water per day. Test for leaks twice a year. You can use either a leak detection tablet (available free at City Hall) or a couple drops of food colouring. Insert these into your toilet tank. If after 15-20 minutes the colour appears in your bowl without flushing then you have a leak. Most leaks can be fixed without a plumber. Visit your local hardware store to talk about what steps to take next.

Going away on vacation?

If you’ll be gone for more than a few days, it’s a good idea to turn off your outside tap at the shut off valve inside your house to prevent tampering while you’re away.
