City Operations

We’re finding ways to make our operations more sustainable. Some of the things we’re doing or planning to do include:

  • Using high efficiency LED lights in all traffic signals
  • Promoting waste diversion programs like using compostable cutlery/dishes at special events
  • Double-sided printing and using recycled paper in all offices
  • Installing drip bags around trees on City property to reduce water use
  • Using recycled tires in the development of Fuhr Sports Park’s playing field

As well, City Council has adopted two formal policies:

City Hall renovation / retrofit

City Hall was renovated to improve customer access to services and minimize environmental impact. It is a LEED Certified building. (Learn more about Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design External). Project highlights include:

  • Increased insulation and natural lighting
  • Improved air quality
  • Low flow water fixtures and toilets
  • Water efficient landscaping
  • 20 per cent of the construction materials were locally purchased
  • Building materials were reused and construction waste was recycled where possible
  • As a result of the renovations, the building’s energy use has declined by 16 per cent, its natural gas use is down 43 per cent, and waste has been reduced by 78 per cent.
