Recruitment & Retention

Recruitment and retention are two essential skills necessary to sustaining and growing a volunteer project, but in order to recruit and retain successfully, we have to understand what motivates people to volunteer, what makes them start volunteering, what makes them continue to volunteer, and what, unfortunately, causes them to stop.

Recruitment is not always about needing more volunteers, but rather creating sustainability in the organization. You may be recruiting to meet specific qualities required such as a trained sport therapist for a team; increasing diversity on the Board (consider a balance of men and women); widening the geographic, or preparing for succession.
