RCMP remind residents that many thefts are crimes of opportunity

The Stony Plain/Spruce Grove/Enoch RCMP have responded to multiple calls of stolen vehicle complaints the past two weeks. Many of these vehicles were left unlocked and running with the keys in the vehicle at the time of the theft. RCMP would like to remind everyone that many of these thefts are crimes of opportunity and are preventable. Taking some of the following steps can help you avoid becoming a victim:
  • Don't leave personal identification in your vehicle.
  • Remove all valuables. This includes loose change and electronic devices such as IPods, cell phones and GPS navigation systems.
  • Never leave your vehicle running and unattended.
  • Always lock the doors.
  • Park in well lit areas with pedestrian traffic. Park your vehicle facing the street. Anyone tampering with it is more likely to be seen.
  • Don't hide spare keys in your vehicle - they can be found (and never put your name or address on your house or car keys).
  • If you have a garage, use it. Lock both the vehicle and garage.
  • Consider installing anti-theft devices.
If you have any information about this matter, please contact the Stony Plain RCMP at 780-968-7267.
