City mourns passing of former Alderman Randy Palivoda

An incredible member of our community

Former Alderman Randy Palivoda. Former City of Spruce Grove Alderman Randy Palivoda

Former City of Spruce Grove Alderman Randy Palivoda lost his battle with cancer on Saturday, June 11, 2011.

Randy served on Spruce Grove City Council for 11 years. He served from 1980-1982 and again from 2001-2010. In addition to being a member of council, Randy served on the Capital Region Board, Meridian Foundation Management Board, the Capital Region Parkland Water Services Commission and the Spruce Grove Library Board on behalf of the City of Spruce Grove.

Along with his dedication and involvement on countless boards and committees, Randy was also 100 per cent committed to the well-being of the community. When he made decisions as an alderman he always considered what was best for the community at large. No issue was too big or too small for Randy. No matter what it was, he cared.

“Randy was an incredible member of our community that will be greatly missed by all,” says Spruce Grove Mayor, Stuart Houston. “He did an outstanding job for the community, not only as an elected official, but also as a resident at large and volunteer. He put incredible effort into the development of our city. Our thoughts are with the Palivoda family during this time. ”

Randy was also involved in the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event. Each time he participated in the Relay for Life he would walk through the entire night and when asked about it he would say that he loved to walk through the night and into the morning, God willing. He was also the inspiration for the City of Spruce Grove’s Movember team as they raised funds and awareness for men's health issues, specifically prostate cancer.

Spruce Grove City Council will observe a moment of silence to pay their respects to Randy at the June 13 Council meeting. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, at St. Andrews United Church on Grove Drive in Spruce Grove.
