Social sustainability focuses on the connections between the economy, the environment and our society and how they can work together to ensure long-term prosperity and a continued quality of life for present and future residents.

A social sustainability plan will examine those connections and ensure strategies are in place to anticipate and respond to the changing social needs of a growing community. It could address topics like transportation, affordable housing, employment, recreation, and health and safety.

As Spruce Grove continues to grow, this type of plan will ensure the City can proactively identify and address social issues as they arise, preserving the health and resiliency of residents and the larger community.

Public consultation and community input is an important part of developing this plan. Public workshops were held in October 2015, which resulted in emerging themes about how residents want to see Spruce Grove develop as a socially sustainable community.

Currently, these themes are as follows:

  • Spruce Grove is an empathetic and inclusive community.
  • Spruce Grove is a safe, proactive and stable community that values our environment and plans for positive economic development.
  • Spruce Grove values and integrates urban and rural lifestyles and supports diversity in all ages and cultures.
  • Spruce Grove invests in community connection and engagement.
  • Spruce Grove is an active community with opportunities to participate in physical, cultural and social events and activities.

Get involved and have a say in the long-term social sustainability of Spruce Grove!
