Tips for managing icy weather conditions

Fluctuating temperatures create icy roads and sidewalks

While Spruce Grove residents are enjoying above average temperatures, recent freezing rain and the thawing / freezing cycle that happens when temperatures fluctuate above and below the freezing mark has created some icy conditions on City roads and sidewalks.

The City’s Public Works department has been busy applying sand and salt to local streets to both provide traction and help melt the ice from the road surfaces. Learn more about the City’s snow and ice control procedures.

City residents also play an important role in keeping sidewalks clear. Under the City’s Traffic Bylaw, property owners are required to remove both snow and ice from public sidewalks adjacent to their property within 48 hours of a snowfall and to keep sidewalks free of ice.

Tips for clearing your sidewalk of ice include:

  • Use an ice chipper or straight edge hoe to break up and remove ice from sidewalks. A regular shovel can also work. Take care not to dig down with excessive force, which could damage the sidewalk.
  • If possible, choose a warmer day to remove ice, as this can make the ice softer and easier to remove.
  • If the ice is too hard or deep to remove by hand, use an ice melt product. These products can be purchased at a variety of stores and are easy to use. Simply spread it on the icy surface and the ice will begin to melt. Pet owners and gardeners may want to consider looking for an ice melt product that has been designed to be safer for animals and plants.
  • Once the ice melt has started working, remove any slush or melted ice from sidewalks so it won’t refreeze.
  • Put down sand or gravel, or another gritty substance (some people use kitty litter). This will help provide more traction on icy surfaces, which may help reduce the risk that someone will slip or fall.
  • Dress appropriately. If possible, wear winter boots with good grip and a pair of gloves to help protect your hands from the elements and the impact of chipping ice.

If you notice unsafe road or sidewalk conditions, you can also report them to the City.
