Makayla, a student at Brookwood School, took command of the Spruce Grove Fire Services on Nov. 9. Her official duties started first thing in the morning when several members of the department arrived at her school to give a presentation, before whisking her off to the fire hall.

She was provided with a tour of the fire department and had a chance to meet all her staff before joining her family for lunch, courtesy of McDonald’s restaurant. The afternoon was filled with more work, including testing out the radio system and helping dispatch an ambulance.

It was then back to school so Makayla could tell her Grade 1 classmates about what she did at the fire department. Then she dismissed her staff and officially ended her first shift as Spruce Grove’s Fire Chief for a Day.

Makayla said the best part of being Fire Chief for a Day was meeting all the firefighters and getting to sit in the big white ladder truck.
