A former volunteer fire chief who served for 40 years with the Spruce Grove Fire Department is the 2011 inductee into Spruce Grove’s Awards of Excellence. Ed Huber will be presented with his award on Canada Day.

In 1958, Huber became Village Fire Chief and County Fire Chief for Spruce Grove and the Winterburn District. Not only was this the start of his integral role in the community’s safety, but he was only 20 years old and became the youngest fire chief in Alberta.

Ed’s key achievements include receiving the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada and the Stylized Maple Leaf for extended fire service also from the Governor General of Canada.

“Ed’s past and present community service go above and beyond what’s expected of any Spruce Grove resident,” says Spruce Grove Mayor, Stuart Houston. “For 40 years he played an instrumental role in protecting the citizens of Spruce Grove through his extensive involvement with Spruce Grove Fire Services. In addition to his involvement with Fire Services, Ed has also served the community in many other capacities through his volunteerism.”

Over the years Ed has been active with the Peace Lutheran and the Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Society. In 2010, he led a fund-raiser that raised $20,000 for the Agricultural Society and coordinated the moving of a historical water tower from a field on the east side of Spruce Grove to the grain elevator site.

Award presentation

The City encourages all residents to come and watch Ed receive his award on Friday, July 1. He will be presented with the award at 7:30 p.m. during the Canada Day festivities at the Spruce Grove Composite High School grounds.
