Spruce Grove introduces new dog identification regulations

Pets must be identified with a tag that displays a current phone number

The City of Spruce Grove is introducing new dog identification regulations.

Instead of purchasing a municipal licence from the City for their pets, dog owners are now required to identify their animals with a tag that displays a current phone number. The tag must be attached to a collar or harness that is worn by the dog when off the owner's property.

"Animal control practices are changing and as such, we are proceeding with a more contemporary approach," explains David Wolanski, General Manager of Community and Protective Services. "While a municipal licence allows the City to access information on the owner, a tag with an operational phone number gives anyone who finds a dog the opportunity to reunite the lost animal with its owner. The majority of dog owners already accept responsibility for, and see the benefit of, identifying their dogs with a tag, so it makes sense to align our regulations with this established practice."

This change is reflected in the City's updated Dog and Domestic Animal Control Bylaw PDF, which was approved by Spruce Grove City Council during a Dec. 12 council meeting.
