Residents reminded to license their dogs

City requires annual licensing of all dogs every January

Spruce Grove dog owners are being reminded to renew or purchase a licence for their furry family members as the City requires annual licensing of all dogs that are six months of age or older every January.

An annual dog licence costs $30, although that number drops to $15 if a dog has been neutered or spayed (certificate of proof from a veterinarian is required). The licensing fee for service dogs is waived.

“There are many reasons why it’s important to purchase a licence for your dog,” says Community and Protective Services General Manager Tim Duhamel. “If your pet becomes lost, the chances of being reunited are much greater if your dog has a licence. The City also uses the fees we collect from dog licences to pay for food, shelter and medical care for stray and homeless animals impounded within the City.”

Residents who have previously purchased a dog licence will receive a renewal reminder in the mail. Dog owners who need to purchase a licence can get one at City Hall.

Duhamel encourages all dog owners to license their animals, even if they are primarily an indoor pet.

“It doesn’t matter if your dog spends most of its time inside or outdoors,” says Duhamel. “There is always a chance a dog can get out or become lost, and this can be especially dangerous for pets that are unfamiliar with being outside.”

Last year, Spruce Grove Enforcement Services received 179 reports of missing dogs and approximately half of those animals were caught and impounded. The fine for having a dog that is not licensed is $50.
