Alleged vehicle owner escapes with car and cash

The Spruce Grove / Stony Plain RCMP are investigating a money scam that started on Kijij, a website that offers free classified and “wanted” advertising. A vehicle was listed for sale, the VIN came back not stolen when it was checked and a meeting was organized between the alleged owner of the car and our car buyer. 

At the meeting, the seller asked to count the $10,000 cash for the sale of the vehicle and the buyer asked to see the vehicle registration. The alleged owner of the vehicle then took off with the vehicle he was allegedly selling and the cash.  The vehicle is owned by a rental car company and now the buyer is out all his money.

Police continue their investigation of this scam / robbery but would like to warn buyers to be very careful when they are making a transaction with a large amount of cash.
