City inducts two residents to Spruce Grove Awards of Excellence

Award presentation to take place during Canada Day ceremony

Two new names are being added to the list of people who have been inducted into the Spruce Grove Awards of Excellence Program.

World champion curler Lesley McEwan is being recognized in the Athletics category and long-time community volunteer Darwin Park is being honoured in the Community Services category. They will be presented with their awards on Canada Day.

McEwan has made multiple trips to the podium in curling as a World Senior Women's Curling Champion in 2013 and a Canadian and Provincial Senior Women's Curling Champion in 2012. She has also competed at the Canadian and World levels in bodybuilding and holds championships at both levels.

Closer to home, McEwan is a respected coach and fitness instructor who has shared her love of sport and a healthy lifestyle with many area residents.

Park has been committed to volunteerism since he moved to Spruce Grove in 1969. He is a charter member of the Spruce Grove Kinsmen Club and assisted the Spruce Grove Legion by chairing the Cenotaph Replacement Program. He has also served on both the Heritage Agricultural Society and the Multicultural Heritage Board.

He was Chair of the City Celebrations Committee in 1986, founding president of the Parkland Pavement Pounders Running Club and a member of the 2012 Winter Games Bid Committee. Most recently Park is on the local organizing committee for the Stage 5 Finish for the Tour of Alberta that will conclude in Spruce Grove.

"We are honoured to recognize these two outstanding citizens with an Award of Excellence," said Spruce Grove Mayor Stuart Houston. "Lesley's accomplishments as an athlete are exceptional and her willingness to be a role model and share her passion and expertise with others is truly inspirational. Darwin is an example of what it means to selflessly give back to those around you and his extensive volunteerism has improved the lives of many in our city and the surrounding area."

Residents are invited to come and watch McEwan and Park receive their awards on Wednesday, July 1. They will be presented with their awards during the Canada Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at Jubilee Park.

The Spruce Grove Awards of Excellence program was established in 2003 as a way for the City to recognize outstanding community members who have contributions in the areas of athletics, arts, education, the environment, innovation, community service or significant achievement.
