City inducts two residents to Spruce Grove Awards of Excellence

An Olympic bronze medalist and the winner of a national culinary competition are being inducted into the Spruce Grove Awards of Excellence Program this year.

Team Canada goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé is being recognized in the Athletics category and Chopped Junior Canada champion Jonathan Giovannoni is being honoured with a Special Citation for Significant Achievement. They will be recognized for their achievements during the City's Canada Day Celebration on July 1 at Jubilee Park.

Labbé, who currently divides her time between playing professional soccer for the Washington Spirit in the National Women's Soccer League and with Canada's National Women's Team, was the starting goalkeeper for Team Canada in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games and helped lead Canada to a bronze medal.

Last year she helped bring the Washington Spirit to the league finals and previously she played for several years with the Swedish Professional League.

Labbé shares her love and expertise for soccer through various coaching sessions and runs Labbé Keeper Camps for aspiring young keepers across Canada.

In additional to his culinary achievements, Giovannoni is also being recognized for his philanthropic work.

After winning Chopped Junior Canada in 2016, Giovannoni went on to compete in Taste of Edmonton and the World Food Championships, which is an invite-only event.

He donated his entire cash prize from Chopped Junior Canada to the Make A-Wish-Foundation and through a variety of fundraisers, he has raised thousands of dollars for charities including Ronald McDonald House and the Stollery Children's Hospital.

"It's an absolute pleasure to recognize these two outstanding individuals with an Award of Excellence," said Spruce Grove Mayor Stuart Houston. "For such a young man, Jonathan has shown maturity and generosity beyond his years and I am sure he has many more culinary achievements ahead of him. Stephanie's accomplishments as an athlete are exceptional and her dedication to her sport - and to sharing her skills with others - is truly inspirational."

The Spruce Grove Awards of Excellence program was established in 2003 as a way for the City to recognize outstanding community members who have contributions in the areas of athletics, arts, education, the environment, innovation, community service or significant achievement.
