Four-legged friends of the feline variety are now part of the City of Spruce Grove’s Dog and Domestic Animal Control Bylaw (Amendment C-801-11)

During a Dec. 12 council meeting, Spruce Grove City Council amended the bylaw to include domesticated cats.

This amendment will allow the City’s contracted animal shelter, Parkland County Animal Shelter External, to begin accepting cats in early 2012. The shelter has been given notice of this change to the bylaw and will require approximately 30 days to make the transition to begin accepting cats on behalf of the City.

Previously, the shelter was only able to accept dogs on behalf of the City.

The amended bylaw also states that Spruce Grove residents can apply to Enforcement Services to rent a live cat trap to catch any cats located on their property. The traps will be available between April 1 and Sept. 30 each year.

Any cats that are caught must be returned to their owners or delivered to the Parkland County Animal Shelter. Failure to do this will result in a $100 fine for the first offence and a $250 fine for all subsequent offences.
