Commuter Transit

The City of Spruce Grove is pleased to offer a commuter transit service to Edmonton through a contract with Edmonton Transit System (ETS) and the City of Edmonton. This service is an affordable and environmentally-friendly alternative to the costs of driving into the city and parking downtown or on campus.

ETS Route 197 PDF is an express service that operates every 15-20 minutes during morning and afternoon peak hours, starting at 5:35 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. The route includes stops at NAIT and Grant MacEwan University, through the downtown core and across the river to the University of Alberta.

Transit survey

The City of Spruce Grove is conducting a review of its transit service. Thanks to everyone who provided input into this review through the online transit survey. Over 400 people took the time to respond. This input will play an important role in the future development of this service over the next several years.

U-Pass for students

All full-time University of Alberta External, Grant MacEwan University External, and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) External students receive a Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass) for the fall and winter academic terms. This pass gives students access to all ETS services within Edmonton including the LRT.

The City of Spruce Grove reminds post secondary students that the Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass) is not accepted on Route 197. The City contracts Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) to provide limited peak-hour service from Spruce Grove to Edmonton. Although Route 197 looks like a typical ETS bus, it is a separate system entirely and there is no transferability between Route 197 and the rest of the ETS system.

Route 197 was designed before the advent of the U-Pass to run directly past popular post-secondary institutions.

The City is aware of the concerns of students and parents about the U-Pass and understands that purchasing both the Route 197 pass and the U-Pass is an added cost for students because they are not able to opt out of the U-Pass.

We are in the early stages of discussions with the student unions on options for this program in the future. The program operates on a three-year contract cycle with the next round of negotiations and student vote to be held in 2013. The City was not included in the last round of discussions.
