Residential Garbage Collection

Garbage and Recycling Bins photo.

The City collects residential waste using a three-stream collection system:

  • Organicart (240 litre green cart) - Used to collect food and yard waste; picked up weekly from April to November
  • Blue Bags (semi-transparent blue plastic bags) - Used to collect household recyclables; picked up every two weeks
  • Black Bin (240 litre black cart) - Used to collect garbage; picked up weekly throughout the year

Each household with a solid waste utility account will receive one Organicart and one black bin. Blue bags can be purchased at most local retail stores.

The City-issued Organicarts and black bins are numbered and specifically assigned to each property. If you move, please leave the black bin and Organicart for the next occupant. If you have recently moved in and found there were no bins, please call 780-962-7584 to arrange to have a set delivered.

Collection Day

On your regular collection day, please properly place your carts and blue bags in the back alley or at the front curb by 7 a.m.

Collection is done using automated trucks. It is important that Organicarts and black bins are set out in a way that will allow the automated arm to pick up the carts. If your carts are not properly set out and the truck driver does not have adequate access, your garbage may not be picked up.

Each cart must be parked on the street against the curb or at the edge of your alley way. The arrows on top of the cart must be pointing towards the roadway and there must be an arm's length of clearance on all sides. Diagram showing proper cart placement PDF Icon..

Residential Garbage Limit

The City instituted a residential garbage limit on April 30, 2007. Each household received a 240-litre black bin to collect garbage. The amount of waste each household puts out will be limited to what the bin will hold with the lid fully closed. On collection day, Garbage will be collected from the black bin only.  Green bin and blue bag services are unaffected.

The Eco Centre located at 50 Diamond Avenue will accept your extra garbage bags charged at a rate of $1.00 per bag. Please Note:  Extra bag tags can no longer be purchased.  You may use your unused bag tags as payment at the Eco Centre. Please do not attach them to the bags; the attendant at the Eco Centre will collect them at the window.

The Eco Centre hours of operation are as follows:

Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday - 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Thursday - noon to 8:00 pm

Sunday and Wednesday - Closed

Rear Lane Service

  • Residents with rear lane service will continue to have their waste and recyclables picked up in the back lane.
  • Millgrove, Grove Meadows and Woodhaven will have rear pickup except during spring thaw when the waste and recyclables will be picked up in the front.
For more information, please call the Waste Services Information Line at 780-962-7580.
